There and Back Again… to the Book Bus

Exploring Decatur’s magical Hobbit Book Bus.

Sometimes the most magical places aren’t found in faraway lands—they’re tucked away in your own hometown.

Here in Decatur, Texas, we have one of those hidden treasures: the Decatur Book Bus. Housed inside a beautifully transformed bus inspired by The Hobbit, it’s a place where stories seem to come alive before you ever open a book. (The Narnia-themed bus is currently getting a makeover, and I can’t wait to see it when it’s finished!)

Last week I took my girls for a visit, camera in hand.

As a photographer, I spend most of my time chasing beautiful outdoor light, so this was a chance to challenge myself in a completely different way. The cozy interior gave me the opportunity to practice photographing in low-light conditions.

Stepping onto the bus felt less like visiting a library and more like wandering into a tiny bookshop tucked away in the Shire. Every shelf invited curiosity, every corner held another story waiting to be discovered, and my girls eagerly searched for their next adventure while I captured the wonder on their faces.

The Decatur Book Bus is a nonprofit community library dedicated to making books accessible and fostering a love of reading in children and families. It’s a creative, welcoming space that brings stories directly into the community and encourages readers of all ages to explore new worlds through books.

As a homeschooling mom, I have a special appreciation for places like this. In a world full of screens and endless distractions, it’s refreshing to watch children become completely absorbed in the pages of a real book.
