I recently had the pleasure of photographing a family who had just moved to Decatur, Texas. They enjoy spending time outdoors and traveling together, so the LBJ National Grasslands felt like a natural fit for their session.

Whenever a family asks for location ideas, I usually send a list of eight to ten options based on the look and setting they have in mind. The LBJ Grasslands is almost always included, and more often than not, it is the location they choose.

It is easy to understand why. The Grasslands offer open fields, tall grass, pine trees, wooded trails, lakes, parks, and even the occasional herd of cows. There is so much variety in one area, which makes it a beautiful setting for family photos in every season.

This family and I also discovered that we had something a little unusual in common. Their oldest and youngest children were the same ages as mine. Having a large age gap between children creates a very specific kind of family lifeโone minute you are thinking about driving lessons and college applications, and the next you are changing diapers or helping with potty training.

It is always fun meeting another parent who understands what it is like to be raising children in completely different stages of life at the same time.

I loved getting to know this family and helping them capture a small piece of their new life here in Decatur.
